WJZF is dedicated to fulfill the intent and spirit of the FCC’s new Community Low Power FM radio service, which was launched in 2000, but did not actually see reality until 2002. Community FM was designed by the FCC to counteract the effects of massive media consolidation of the 90’s, which removed local broadcast outlets from the hands of local people and communities. Community radio is designed to allow local groups, agencies, government, artists, churches, schools, musicians, theater, educators, and other individuals and groups, the ability to be heard on the people’s airwaves. Standish Citizens Educational Organization, Inc., Licensee of WJZF greatly encourages participation of groups and individuals to make a contribution to our programming, after all WJZF is YOUR station! It’s easy to contact WJZF! Just e-mail us at WJZFradio@aol.com or call us at 207-642-7950 or at cell 207-232-7005 with program ideas or a request for airtime. History Standish Citizens Educational Organization, Inc., (SCEOI) formed as an exploratory group in February, 2000, shortly after the FCC announced plans for the new Low Power FM (LPFM) service to determine the viability of a community radio station for Standish and the Lakes Region area of Southern Maine. SCEOI became incorporated as a non-profit educational entity in early May, 2002, and filed for an LPFM construction permit (CP) in late May, 2002. By late December, 2003, SCEOI was awarded a CP to build only the second LPFM station in the State of Maine. Construction ceased in January, 2005, and on January 20 2005, WJZF went on the air! WJZF operated on a CP until September 20, 2005, when our license was granted. Student Internship WJZF encourages liaison with local universities and colleges to provide Journalism and Broadcast majors the opportunity to intern with us in the following areas: program development, program production, program hosting, and announcing Feel free to contact WJZF at any time! WJZF is a non-profit, non-commercial, community FM station operated in the public interest by Standish Citizens Educational Organization, Inc., a 501c3, tax-exempt organization and also a charitable foundation as authorized by the IRS. Our primary source of revenue is by private grants, local small businesses, and from generous contributions by our listeners. Operating a Community FM station for the benefit of our listeners is still an expensive proposition, so we greatly encourage listeners to donate and help maintain the high quality of broadcasting on WJZF. ALL donations are 100% tax deductible for the year contributed.
